Hazardous Waste

Our many years in the supply of products and services and committing to a comprehensive partnership solution led Spectrum to becoming licensed brokers of hazardous waste.

No matter what the waste stream, our highly trained personnel are able to ensure that the route to disposal is both economical and compliant in every way.

We are now seeing the most sweeping changes in the implementation of Hazardous Waste Regulations and Landfill Directives in the past 30 years.

Many are unaware that there has been a re-classification of a host of wastes that renders them Hazardous with the introduction of definitions contained in the European Waste Catalogue. Changes to the licensing and the adoption of more stringent Waste Acceptance Criteria testing has restricted the number of sites able to process certain types of hazardous, chemical and toxic waste.

Spectrum are able to assist with these complex regulations and offer compliant cost-effective hazardous waste and chemical waste disposal solutions which will ensure your business stays within the law. We handle all volumes from one bottle to full loads of bulk or packaged materials providing a full service covering, where necessary, analysis, packing, labelling, transport and disposal.

Using our extensive knowledge on the subject of hazardous chemical waste disposal, we will select the most appropriate route for your wastes and ensure all documentation and licensing is in place. Options for hazardous waste disposal include:

Hazardous Landfill

Historically the least expensive option but changes in waste acceptance criteria and reductions in capacity make delivering waste directly to site often impractical and more expensive these days.

Still a viable option for larger quantities and bulk wastes (contaminated soils) as well as regular homogeneous wastes such as contaminated packaging. All waste must be subject to laboratory analysis before acceptance which adds costs pre disposal.

Incineration

There are a number of incinerators throughout the UK with differing capabilities. Some are able to burn non-hazardous waste and clinical waste with energy recovery (some recycling) whilst most hazardous waste, including all pesticides, need to be sent to specialist high temperature waste incinerators for final destruction. This is regarded as the safest and most effective way of dealing with combustible organic wastes, which are unsuitable for landfill because of their toxicity, flammability or resistance to natural breakdown.

Treatment / Recovery

Most chemical waste is consigned to treatment and processing plant before going to their final disposal sites. These facilities will process wastes, for example, by neutralising acid / basic wastes, denaturing aqueous solutions and shredding and reducing the volume of packaging.

Low flash point wastes may be recovered for re-use in chem-fuels. Using our extensive knowledge Spectrum can advise on the suitability of each disposal route and arrange for any necessary testing and analysis required.

Health & Safety Consultancy

Our second area of expansion has seen Spectrum move into the Health and Safety advice/consultancy arena. This sector obviously goes hand in hand with our other business activities and serves to make Spectrum a total solution provider for our customers.

Covering all aspects of Health & Safety such as policy audits, risk assessments, method statements, emissions testing, manual handling training, spill training etc. Advice and training is carried out by our own trained and qualified staff wherever possible, however we also work closely with partners to cover specialist areas.

Again we are finding this area of huge benefit to our customers by providing solutions to the 'headaches' of conformity and compliance. For more information on this area please ask for a copy of our Health & Safety brochure.
